When I was in business school, professors in my quant ("quantitative," or math and computer-intensive) class professors told us that we could design accurate predictive models for just about any competition. One look at the stock market over the past six months would argue strongly against that. Still, it's fun to try, right? Well, Unspam Technologies, a company that designs models to identify spam emails based on the words included in the text, has analyzed the films in competition at Sundance this year and believes it has identified the winners and losers.

Happy New Year, everybody! Here's hoping for a successful 2009 for all of us. As I write this, the Sundance Film Festival is kicking off in earnest, inaugurating the 2009 festival season. This raises the perennial question for documentary filmmakers -- what should my festival strategy be? Should filmmakers apply to small and mid-sized festivals, or hold out for the "A-list" fests like Sundance, Berlin, Toronto and Venice? |
